Professional Development for Iowa School Leaders

Bootcamp for New School Business Officials

Audience

school business managers and board secretaries

Description

This session is designed for those individuals early in their responsibilities as business managers and board secretaries. The purpose is to provide new business officials not only with some basic knowledge but to also begin developing a professional network of experienced individuals upon whom they can call for advice and direction. The focus is to help new people know what is expected of them and how to manage those first critical months with payroll, end of year reporting, and the startup of a new year.

The complexity of the jobs, and the related necessity of increased skill levels, has increased markedly in recent years. Even business officials entering the positions with accounting backgrounds have expressed extreme stress as they attempt to learn the unique features of governmental accounting and the requirements placed upon school fiscal matters.

The timing in mid-July is to provide assistance and direction very early in their responsibilities. The regular conferences of the association do not occur until early October and the mentor program does not usually become effective for the new business officer until September. That effectively leaves the new person with 2-3 months to survive on their own.
